Uniform Faithful Presidential Electors Act - Background Memo
Attached hereto is the drafting Committee’s proposed Uniform Faithful Presidential Electors Act, dealing with the problem of “faithless electors”— electors who vote for presidential or vice-presidential candidates other than the candidates for those offices of the political party that nominated the electors. The proposed act addresses the problem by requiring electors to sign a pledge to vote faithfully, and then, should any electors attempt to violate the pledge they have taken, providing for substitute electors who in turn are required to sign a pledge and vote accordingly until a full set of compliant votes is obtained.
